Verisk Analytics is a $35B data & analytics behemoth.

Verisk's first major acquisition occurred in 2000 when it purchased Innovative Property Solutions (IPS) from Marsh & McLennan Companies. IPS was a provider of software and services for the property insurance industry. This was followed by a series of strategic purchases in the property insurance sector, including ISO in 2004 and Xactware in 2006. These acquisitions strengthened Verisk's position as a leading provider of insurance data and analytics. Within the acquisition spree for property and insurance data was Build Fax, a provider of property condition and history data. BuildFax has a database of building permits, contractors, and inspection data to provide critical information about the condition of properties.

In addition to its focus on property insurance, Verisk has also expanded into other insurance markets, such as life insurance and casualty insurance. In 2010, Verisk acquired Terrafirma, a provider of aerial imagery and data for the insurance industry. This acquisition helped Verisk to better assess and manage property risks.

More recently, Verisk has expanded its focus to include energy and financial services. In 2015, Verisk acquired Wood Mackenzie, a leading provider of energy consultancy data. This acquisition gave Verisk a foothold in the energy market and expanded its data and analytics capabilities.

The company has a strong track record of integrating acquisitions and leveraging its acquired assets to develop new products and services.

One of the other acquisitions that I think was underappreciated was their acquisition of Argus which gave them deep insights into credit and debit spending data similar to what is offered by Yodlee. They ultimately sold the business to Transunion for just over $500m in 2012.

Verisk is one of those public data & analytics companies that continues to grow and continues to make smart strategic acquisitions. Only time will tell how they will integrate AI on top of their growing data lake of information.
