Data Brokers just got a gift. The CFPB Kills Rule to Shield Your Data!

Data brokers that sell our personal sensitive data just got a gift from the CFPB as they quietly killed a rule to regulate the selling of this type of data.

The rules were crafted to ensure consent before sharing or selling personal data such as income. “Data brokers operate within a multibillion-dollar industry built on the collection and sale of detailed personal information—often without individuals’ knowledge or consent. These companies create extensive profiles on nearly every American, including highly sensitive data such as precise location history, political affiliations, and religious beliefs. This information is frequently resold for purposes ranging from marketing to law enforcement surveillance.”

Who are these data brokers? Experian, Equifax, Acxiom, Epsilon, CoreLogic, and many many more. Many of these data brokers have policies in place to make sure they have consent and are only tracking things they have permission to track. That being said, for every good actor, there are dozens of bad actors. Having bought data for many years in my previous roles, I can think of dozens of bad actors that were selling data that they didn’t really have permission for.
