Stocktwits & Monark teamed up to run a private markets survey. Lets check out the results!

In collaboration with Stocktwits, Monark surveyed 500 self-directed Accredited Investors, to better understand their investing habits and preferences in accessing private markets.

In a 2022 Market Report, iCapital projected that the Mass-Affluent and Affluent markets in the US held over $27 Trillion of investable assets across over 18 Million households. Together, these investors represent the total market of Accredited Investors, which the SEC generally defines as an individual with over $200K in annual income or at least a $1M net-worth.

First lets look at what platforms users are leveraging. Not surprising that $HOOD and $SCHW are the winners followed by Fidelity and WeBull.

Now lets look at how allocated users are to private markets. Unsurprisingly the results show that almost half are less than 5%. Why? I think it’s a deal flow and access problem. For most people its not clear how to allocate to privates and if they have access they don’t have access to the best opportunities or managers.

How much are people interested in allocating to privates? Interestingly there is demand for private allocations as a good portion of a diversified portfolio.

If you are allocating how are you doing it? It’s a mixed bag. Nobody is really dominating.

In the end, I think access to private markets are changing. Founders of $HOOD have talked about how blockchain/crypto will allow us to tokenized assets and make private markets more liquid and available. I also personally think we need changes to the accredited investor and qualified purchaser rules. We have a new SEC and lots of the regulatory frameworks are being reviewed. It will be interesting to see if tokenization pushes private market access forward.
