News & Chat - That's What Makes Bloomberg Great

The Initial Data Offering (IDO) community is a place for data enthusiasts to discover new datasets daily.

The mission is to build a community of data enthusiasts and curate high-quality, unique datasets for businesses, researchers, and organizations worldwide.

Why do people pay $2k or more per month for a Bloomberg terminal? It has so many functions there is no way to keep up. EQS <go> , OVME <go> , G <go> - this is just a few of the functions. What is <go>? It is the enter button on a keyboard, but on a Bloomberg keyboard, it’s called Go. As someone who started their career at Bloomberg and had a terminal up until the last 18 months, I can say it is a remarkable product. Hard to navigate, many flaws, but a remarkable product. The two most valuable parts of the terminal, without a doubt, are the chat functionality and the news.

Chat- it’s where everyone on Bloomberg lives. Chat rooms, one-on-one chats, the use cases are similar to Slack, but everyone on the terminal is focused on the markets. Symphony and many others have tried building entire businesses around making chat rooms and chat functionality for the financial markets. They have had varying success, but not anywhere near Bloomberg given it has so much more functionality built around it. And the Data, the data speaks for itself.

News- this I believe is the super power. Where else can you get news so easily tagged to every public company or topic? Aggregated and created by the Bloomberg news team. The best function in my opinion on the entire Bloomberg terminal is READ <go>. What are the most popular things being read on the terminal in the last 24hrs? READ 1H <go> is where I was always looking- Most read news in the last hour. Knowing what others who work in the same industry as you are reading is powerful. You never have FOMO because you can easily see what others are doing

There are so many great tools being built to chip away at the Bloomberg terminal. Many with AI being infused into the platform. But I still wonder when we will see someone crack the Bloomberg terminal news functionality.
