Every hedge fund has used YipitData in the past, and now the Carlyle-backed company is going to test the market as they try to sell the business for $2.5B+ according to Reuters. $280m in revenue and growing 30%, is it enough to find buyers? All eyes from the alternative data world are watching to see who the buyer is and what the ultimate outcome will be. M Science and Oxford Data Plan are the most relevant peers in the space. Lots of hedge funds will be interested to see who the new owner is and how that will affect their usage going forward. But importantly for Yipit, they have lots of corporate clients too which is not easy for many in the data space, especially those that sell to hedge funds, to pull off.
The data space is in need of a multi-billion dollar exit. The last great exit of real size was arguably SNL when $SPGI ( ▼ 0.16% ) made the acquisition. We saw Tegus acquired and Visible Alpha, but neither of those touched the multi-billion-dollar status.
