Movers & Shakers

Movers & Shakers- that was my first experience when joining Bloomberg. Movers & Shakers was what they called promotions and the energy during those promotional events was top-notch!

When I joined Bloomberg out of college, Lex Fenwick was the CEO, and one thing I will always remember, besides the purple suit he wore often, was the Movers & Shakers events. Movers & Shakers was the Bloomberg way of promoting people to a new position. As I was in San Francisco, Lex would pop onto the TV screen, announce over the loudspeakers ‘Moooooooovers & Shaaaaaaakersssss!’ and everyone would gather in the kitchen area. He would then announce who was moving and shaking into their new role as we all clapped. I remember music playing in the background and Lex would be on the screen, sometimes lying on his desk in NYC. It was that energy and excitement that he brought that I will always remember about my time at Bloomberg.

The culture Lex brought to Bloomberg was more than just purple suits and Movers & Shakers. I remember the stories about the B-Unit, which is the biometric device to log into a Bloomberg if you don’t have the Bloomberg keyboard.

There were always rumors that B-Unit was named after G-Unit which was one of Lex’s favorite rap groups to listen to. Many times there would be rumors of Lex turning on some 50 Cent song on the loud speaker in NYC on a Friday afternoon, locking his office, and then leaving for the day. The music would be blasting throughout the building and everyone would be laughing as security had to get into his office to shut it off.

One of the other rumors that would always be talked about was the boxing ring that was added to the basement in the London office. People would speculate that it was to encourage competition or to get in some exercise between sales calls.

Overall my early years at Bloomberg were some of the best memories. I give Lex the credit because he brought his own version of culture to the organization and was always selling. I remember him in meetings giving speeches or hearing stories about him joining sales meetings throughout NYC.

Years later I saw Lex while working at Third Point at which point he had moved on from Bloomberg, and it was still the same great energy. Culture is hard to build in an organization and a team, but if you do it right, the memories, stories, and laughter it can bring are priceless.
