Not everyone is the right fit. Don’t take it personally.
Finding investors is like dating. Not everyone is the right fit. Even if they invest in your sector and your stage, they may not like your thesis, approach, vision, or they don’t think you will work well together over the next 7-10 years. It’s like dating; not everyone is a fit. They may just not feel like you are a good fit for their family i.e. other founders, LP’s, network.
I try to remind founders that finding an investor is like dating. You have to go on a lot of dates. You have to go on lots of second dates to figure out if they are a fit. There is no reason to argue with an investor that you are a fit. Sure, sell yourself. Explain why you think you would be good together, but eventually, if they are saying no, move on, thank them, you never know if you will run into them again, do business in the future, or be connected to someone they may introduce you to.
Dating is hard. Finding the perfect match is hard. Finding investors is no different. For founders, you are finding a date, an investor, and then for your next round starting over again to grow your family of investors. Life is too short to get angry, to get frustrated. If it’s not a fit, onwards and upwards. If it is a fit, great, the dating process begins. Learn as much as you can and meet in person! In person is so important for long-term relationships to be successful!
