Why is it so hard to track media about a person?

I keep coming back to this need or want for better news tracking and I can’t find a good solution...WHY

Why is it so hard to track news and information about someone? I still haven’t seen a good media tracker for following someone’s blog, LinkedIn comments, Twitter, and when they are mentioned in the news. I just want to type in their name or their company and Boom, following everything in one stream. They say “it’s not information overload, it’s filter failure”, well I have filter failure.

I would think there should be someone tracking every entity and platform associated with a person. For example, type in Matt Ober and simply track everything associated with me: I write this blog, I work at Social Leverage which also has a blog, I post on Linkedin, I post on Twitter, and maybe I get mentioned in the news every once and a while.

This dataset would be extremely valuable. You could also crowdsource it from a community and allow everyone to add people to track and make suggestions. Some of the platforms like Linkedin and others are hard to easily track every posting, but there should be workarounds.

Overall I think this is an interesting business opportunity. In my current role, this would be great for me to easily track every company we are invested in and the founders, as well as the fund managers we back in our Access Fund. It could be a simple interface or look like a Tweetdeck. I know from talking with some in the PR space that there isn’t an elegant solution. WHY?
