Understanding what drives a stock is key when leveraging data. French fries are the only thing that matters…

I remember the first time someone said to me “French fries are the only thing that matters.” I was learning about a consumer stock from an analyst and trying to think through what types of alternative data could give us insight into the name. That’s when I realized, that the key to a data science team at a fundamental hedge fund being successful is all about communication with the analyst and PM. It all comes down to having the right company culture.

What really matters with this stock? What is the key metric, KPI, event, or catalyst? Tracking data points and having insight into a company is great, but if we don’t know what is going to make the stock pop one way or the other, then it’s all really just a waste of time.

Asking the right questions & understanding how company management is thinking is important. Without a layer of qualitative insight, it’s hard to deliver any insightful data. So make sure to figure out what’s most important…..even if it’s french fries.
