Don’t worry about….inspired by a recent post I saw from Ted Merz (legend who worked for Bloomberg). In reality, you will worry about all these things when selling data, but honestly, don’t worry about it.
Don’t Worry About having marketing materials
Don’t Worry About having a white paper
Don’t Worry About having a technical salesperson
Don’t Worry About cannibalizing the business by working with 3rd party distributors
Don’t Worry About how to price the dataset
Don’t Worry About who will buy your data.
Don’t Worry About what data marketplace is best to partner with
Don’t Worry About customer support
Don’t Worry About SLA’s
Don’t Worry About compliance
Don’t Worry About legal paperwork
Don’t Worry About if you have enough history
Don’t Worry About if you cover enough unique assets, tickers, or entities
Don’t Worry About the data gatekeepers
Don’t Worry About selling the data to too many clients
Don’t Worry About about what value the data provides
Don’t Worry About competitors with similar data
Don’t Worry About API vs FTP vs Snowflake vs Excel delivery
Don’t Worry About not getting feedback from the client
Don’t Worry About trials taking months to complete
Don’t Worry About no answers to your emails
Don’t Worry About how expensive it is to be a sponsor or have a table at a data conference
Don’t Worry About how your website looks
Don’t Worry About if you have enough people to support the clients that have signed up
Don’t Worry About the TAM for your data
Don’t Worry About churn
Don’t Worry About perfection
In the end, these are all things to worry about. But can you control all of them? Not really. Maybe. But better to get some feedback and get yourself out there. Work with experts. Build a network of trusted advisors or partners. Pay for talent or expertise.
