As I get ready to go to Montreal in a little over a week for the Fintech week and Portage event, I've been thinking about the great founders and opportunities we have backed in Canada. Social Leverage has had roots in Canada with our partners growing up there so it's only natural for us to have a network and see opportunities in the north. As I think about the investments we have made in Canada and investments I made prior to Social Leverage in Canada, I find that all the founders I've worked with have similar traits. The traits that stick out to me are both confidence and a grit to never give up.
My first investment in a Canadian company was when I was at WorldQuant Ventures and we backed Canalyst which Damir Hot was the CEO of. They ultimately were acquired by Tegus which is part of AlphaSense now. Damir always had confidence and a big vision and selling into hedge funds takes a lot of grit. I also learned during that first investment in Canalyst that Canadian investors loved backing Canadian founders.
At Social Leverage the founders have been great to work with in Canada from StreetContxt, Ribbon.ai & Finchat. These companies based out of Toronto have been building their teams locally and finding great talent. As we continue to look at investment opportunities across Canada, I am excited to make the trip up to Montreal.
If you are a seed stage company in Canada or know of one, send them our way. And if you'll be in Montreal for the Fintech week, shoot me a message.
