The analytics desk at Bloomberg was the original ChatGPT for finance, but instead of modern-day AI responses, you had young 20-something-year-olds furiously answering as many questions as possible. Help Help
Arguably some of the best training you could get in financial markets. Graduate college and go right into a deep dive in every asset class and every possible function and feature on the Bloomberg terminal. The analytics desk was thousands of recent college grads answering unlimited numbers of chats from anyone with a Bloomberg terminal. Press HELP HELP on your keyboard and get access to a chat room to ask any question imaginable.
How do you chart the MACD and RSI for Google in a candlestick chart? How do I use the options calculator for valuing a double no-touch on the S&P 500? How can I see the historical volatility of NFLX? I want to see a chart of 5yr CDS on Bank of America and understand who is contributing to the pricing.
The questions were nonstop, the types of questions were endless, the stress levels were through the roof, and the opportunity to learn on the spot was amazing! The people that loved it stayed in the analytics department and on the help desk. They specialized. They were given multiple-week intensive classes on equity derivatives, structured notes, charting & technical analysis, commodities, and more. All of these classes were taught by ex-Wall Streeters with decades of experience with testing administered at the end of every week.
The on-the-job training was like the financial education you could only dream of. Bloomberg trained some of the best talents that went on to work and become leaders at the most prominent banks and hedge funds. That training, that experience, it’s priceless. When people ask about what type of job they should look for out of college, that is it! Somewhere that you can learn and really find out what you are interested in.
